District 9 Conference will be held October 6-9 2011

In beautiful, Long Beach, California at the Hilton Long Beach & Executive Meeting Center hotel.
We are delighted to announce that Dr. Lois Frankel will be our keynote speaker on Friday, October 7th. Dr. Frankel
literally wrote the book on coaching people to succeed in businesses large and small around the globe. Her books Nice
Girls Don't Get The Corner Office and Nice Girls Don't Get Rich are international bestsellers translated into over twenty-
five languages worldwide. Her new book Nice Girls Just Don't Get It will be released in April. This new look at successful
women expands the tips from Nice Girls Don't Get the Corner Office to all aspects of a woman's life. Dr.

Courage House speaker Tara Siegal at our February meeting

We were pleased to welcome Tara Siegal to our February 2011 meeting from Courage 2 B U. C2BU is building
Courage Houses, homes for children rescued from the hideous world of sex trafficking.
The first homes are being built in Northern California and in Tanzania, Africa, and are slated
to have girls living in them by the fall or winter of 2010.
Why is Courage House different than any other solution…
• It’s not just a program; it is a home. It has no minimum or maximum defined stay
• It’s a safe house. Location is undisclosed so perpetrators cannot find girls
• Each girl will develop an individual Unique Life Plan (ULP) addressing her physical, emotional,
psychological, educational, psychosocial and spiritual needs. Resources will be
provided and plans created to ensure each girl’s successful transition to independent,
self-sufficient living.
• Whether placement is voluntary or mandatory, we recognize these children are prone to
run away because of their trauma and their difficulty in navigating and participating in
healthy relationships. We will have protocols in place as part of each girl’s life plan to
address the triggers of running away. In addition, we will offer a menu of activities that
are intentionally designed to daily exhaust and nurture the mind and body of each girl in
a healthy, therapeutic way.
• Though there will be no minimum stay defined at Courage House, we recognize that
state license requirements will not allow all girls to stay past their 18 1/2 year birthday.
We anticipate establishing Courage House Too, a home for girls who are “aging out”, but
still require structure, therapy, and assisted transition towards independent living whether
that might be attending college, working a job or vocational training.
The good news is the Courage House is awaiting its license and plan to move forward very
soon.
What can we do?
• Share the message, by bringing friends to benefit concerts to raise money and educate
with speakers from Courage to be You.
• Monthly Donors, gift cards from Target and RC Willey wishlist and the Courage Cafe.

to the Zonta International, the amount of the individual donation does not matter. All
clubs that meet the 100 percent mark will be invited to a special ZI Foundation reception at the
International Convention in Torino, Italy. Visit www.zonta.org to donate.
Thank you to our February dinner meeting speaker Deb Roth for sharing her empowering experience
with women in our community. It was educational for everyone.

Japanese Zontians impacted by the earthquake and tsunami

Dianne Curtis Letterhead Header
Dear Zontians,
District 26 Governor Tokue Ueda has been in contact with me regarding assistance for the Japanese Zontians impacted by the earthquake and tsunami.

Governor Tokue has advised me that all members of the Akita, Sendai, Fukushima, Yamagata, Kooriyama, Hakodate and Kushiro Clubs are safe and that some of the members of the Shiogama Club have been located.  This is good news as grave fears had been held for the Shiogama Club.

I am discussing with Governor Tokue how Zontians can assist members in Japan and will let you know the outcome once it has been resolved.

I understand that all Zontians wish to support District 26, and I appreciate you giving us the time to work through all the details.  Please continue to check the Zonta International website for updates.

I would like to share the following message that I received from Governor Tokue.   < /p>

Thank you to many Zontians in the world for your prayers, thoughts and good wishes and your offers of help to the victims suffered by the Tohoku-Kanto Earthquake/Tsunami. Besides we are facing an additional disaster, the breakdown of the nuclear plant after earthquake which makes us so uneasy.  We are thankful to find there are no casualties among ZC members of Akita, Sendai, Fukushima, Yamagata, Kooriyama, Hakodate and Kushiro. Some of the members of the Shiogama Club have been located. This is good news as grave fears had been held for the Shiogama Club.

Tohoku/Pacific off-shore Earthquake which is a largest tragedy that Japan had ever faced before, the number of victims are more than 450,000 and about 4,300 people are killed and 8,200 missing. Those victims in shelter are suffered from the cold weather (some nights below 0 centigrade) and not enough blankets and other needs.  Especially many areas have no gas, water, electricity so imagine their haggard feeling is growing over the limits of human being.

Nothing is more welcome than a kind of sympathy from friends at such a time of anxiety and distress as this. It's very thoughtful of you to inquire after us and to offer help and I sincerely appreciate your kindness. We are now preparing the account for donations from abroad. I'll let you know as soon as we fix it.

Thank you again to the many Zonta friends who have sent messages.

Sincerely,

Tokue Ueda
District 26 Governor

Zonta Rose Day March 8

International Women's Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the economic, political
and social achievements of women past, present and future.
The Zonta Rose
The yellow rose has been a symbol of Zonta International for decades. It has
adorned many Zonta items from stationery to clothing and is used in charter and anniversary
celebrations. International Women’s Day is now an official holiday in Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan,
Belarus, Bulgaria, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, China (for women only), Cuba, Georgia, Guinea‐Bissau, Eritrea,
Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Madagascar (for women only), Moldova, Mongolia, Montenegro, Nepal (for women
only), Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uganda, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Vietnam and Zambia. The tradition
sees men honoring their mothers, wives, girlfriends, colleagues, etc with flowers and small gifts. In some countries
International Women’s Day has the equivalent status of Mother's Day where children give small presents to their mothers and grandmothers.
